Dn. Tom Sabol was ordained a permanent deacon for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in June 2003 and is assigned to St. Timothy Church. Dn. Tom is also assigned to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels as a stational deacon and is the deacon at the UCLA University Catholic Center. His service ministry is dedicated toward higher education outreach and Catholic young adult leadership development. He served for many years as a member of the Board of Directors for a local Catholic elemtary and high school.
Dn. Tom earned his MA in pastoral theology at Loyola University, Chicago, his PhD in earthquake and structural engineering from UCLA and his MBA from Loyola Marymount University. He is a principal at Englekirk , a Los Angeles based firm specializing in structural engineering, earthquake engineering and wind engineering. Since 1998, Dn. Tom has been a member of the faculty of the UCLA Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate classes in tall building design, structural steel, and professional practice.
His wife and he have two children. Dn. Tom's wife is a long-time coach of the ADLA Jr. High Academic Decathalon, which she sees as a young person's path to realizing the benefits of teamwork, self-confidence and academic achievement. His daughter teaches at a local Catholic elementary school and his son is pursuing a graduate degree in fine arts. When not otherwise occupied, Dn. Tom enjoys gardening, woodworking, reading and rooting for the Bruins. He has major UCLA credentials: 3 graduate degrees from UCLA, bloodlines through both his parents as UCLA graduates, and matrimonial affiliation through his wife as a UCLA graduate. He is, literally, a Son of Westwood!
