Map to Dolores Mission

History and function: Founded in 1988 by Proyecto Pastoral, Guadalupano Homeless Project (GHP), is located on the grounds of the Dolores Mission Catholic Church. Its purpose is to assist male immigrants who have been forced to leave their countries due to political upheavals or economic reasons. The commitment and devotion demonstrated by the Pico-Aliso community has been instrumental to the initiation, development, and implementation of this program. Over a period of ten years, GHP has offered uninterrupted services to hundreds of men. They have left an indelible mark on this community.

The GHP Mission:  To offer a safe place to all men who are faced with the realiites of homelessness. GHP services help to improve the conditions in the lives of these men. GHP offers educational training for the development of the whole person and personal integration into their society.

Group Project:

1. Three to four couples will be act as a team to prepare a dinner meal. Dinner is served between 6:00 or 7:00 PM on the weekdays, so the couples need to arrive between 4:00 and 4:30 PM if they are cooking on-site or between 5:00 and 5:30 if they have prepared the meal off-site and only need to warm it up. On Sunday, the men attend the 6:00 PM Mass, so preparation and mealtimes are about one hour later.

2. Call a couple of days prior to your assignment and ask Arturo Lopez (or whoever answers the phone) at (323) 881-0032 for the current census -- it will vary between 40 and 60 men. This will determine how many meals need to be prepared. In early November 2000, the census is running about 40.

3. Using either your own food or food obtained through Jamie Stellos (see below), prepare a meal consisting of: meat (shredded or chopped), beans, and rice. Tortillas can accompany the meal.

4. Serve the meal on the paper goods provided. Once the food is served, please join them for the meal and fellowship.

5. The men will clean up.

Food: If you you cannot provide food for the group, Jamie Stellos will help obtain the food from the USDA program. Please contact Jamie at (818) 363-4200 (home)  or (323) 874-5577 (work).
